Ah, our lovely little gerbils

Now, I'm obviously not one for keeping "pets" but when I inherited gerbils, along with my man, I fell so in love. Skunk is the male, and he's called Skunk because he's black with a white stripe -- also acts like he's stoned all the time, too. Such a chilled out super-meditative boy. Suerte is the girl and she's called Suerte (Lucky in English) because her mother ate all her other babies, Suerte was the only one to survive. Then she went on an adventure with her dad and he died, but she survived. Then her mum died of a broken heart (as gerbils often do when their mate goes), and she survived. And now she's with Skunk, the best male gerbil ever, living in a palace with trees, a pond and rocks -- a very lucky girl indeed.

Note to anyone thinking of getting an animal: They don't belong in our homes, they belong in the wild, where they can be free to act on their instincts. However, if you want an animal, please go to a rescue centre, and not a pet shop. Though animals in pet shops are beautiful, and have "take me home" eyes, as soon as you do that the pet shop buys more animals with your money! Please don't become part of this problem, it's not fair on the animals. However, if animals are already captive, it's unlikely they'll survive outside, so it's up to us to provide as natural a habitat as possible for them to live their lives in.

Suerte and Skunk eating
Blurry Suerte and Skunk. See how she's eating the dried fruit and he's got strawberry and lettuce! Aw.

Skunk and his rocks
Skunk in a corner of his garden. They don't have a lid on them, or wire or anything and they never try to get out -- such happy babies.

Close up of Skunk
Skunk having a bit of an itch. Isn't he lovely and shiny? Must be all the polishing I do. No, really, it's down to the fact that he eats more fresh fruit and veg than madam. He's just like his mummy -- when I make my breakfast smoothie, he has that, and particularly loves it if it's got Superfood in it. Sometimes he licks it off my finger and I feel his little raspy mini-cat-like tongue. Oh! I love him. Oh yes, and black gerbils are shinier than grey gerbils. Conveniently forgot about that bit.

"I've always avoided "Cole Slaw", but your recipe has made me a convert! My husband and I fight over who's getting the bigger share!" -- Sue, USA

Close up of Suerte
Ah, Suerte is so beautiful!

Suerte and a loo roll
Suerte is telling Skunk to chew the toilet roll to make the bed with. Fernando doesn't like unnatural things in their house, so tells me not to put toilet rolls in, but they like to shred them, it's good for their teeth. Anyway, I put them in in the mornings when Fernando's at work, so by the time he gets home, he can't see any evidence. I did once have a really big tube that Skunk loved to chew on, but I had to keep taking it off him at night to hide it, and that made him a bit confused!

Suerte on her doorstep
This is Suerte standing on her doorstep. That's her bedroom behind her, and some of her garden in front. She loves standing on her doorstep, and viewing the world. She's definitely a Spanish woman.
